Pre-Prep School

An enriched and dynamic curriculum

Salcombe Pre-Prep is nestled alongside our Early Years provision at Green Road, ensuring a seamless transition for pupils from Reception.

Throughout Pre-Prep, pupils continue to experience the nurturing environment they are accustomed to from our Early Years provision. Here, they are warmly welcomed into a setting where clear expectations for classroom attitude and behaviour are coupled with gentle guidance and support. Learning continues to be ignited through a variety of enriching opportunities, crafted to spark curiosity and foster engagement.

Unlocking every pupils’ potential

At Salcombe’s Pre-Prep, pupils embark on an academic journey filled with increasing challenges and positive encouragement to reach their full potential.

While we adhere to the National Curriculum, pupils are encouraged to surpass expectations, often working a year ahead. Our diverse timetable ensures a rich learning experience, covering a wide range of subjects. In English, pupils delve into grammar and descriptive writing, while Maths focuses on essential skills such as coin recognition and basic arithmetic.

Through ICT, they become familiar with laptop applications, preparing for the digital world. Additionally, through the study of Modern Foreign Languages, they gain a global perspective and strong language foundations.

As pupils progress to Year 2, both Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning are introduced into our curriculum, enriching pupils' cognitive abilities and preparing them for the challenges ahead. Moving to Year 2 also brings exciting new responsibilities, as pupils become role models for younger peers and occasionally assist Early Years pupils with reading.

Curriculum Overview

Every Child's Learning Journey

Year 1 and 2 Subjects

Personalised Learning: Empowering Every Child

For pupils beginning their educational journey at Pre-Prep, we prioritise addressing any educational gaps to ensure a smooth and confident start.

We understand that all pupils learn at different rates and possess varying abilities compared to their peers. This is why we take pride in adapting our teaching and learning techniques to every pupil’s specific needs, amplifying their strengths, providing support in areas of difficulty, and empowering each pupil to believe, achieve, and thrive in their success.

Learning outside the classroom

At Salcombe Prep, learning is an adventure. Exciting outings to places such as the London Transport Museum and London Postal Museum enhance our curriculum, building anticipation for future trips each term.

Trips and visits are a crucial part of our educational approach, offering hands-on experiences that leave lasting memories. Our dedicated teaching staff plan diverse trips, seamlessly integrating them into our curriculum to instil life skills beyond the classroom.

Homework, Feedback and Communication

A balanced approach to learning

At Salcombe Prep, we believe in fostering a balanced approach to learning, which includes homework and providing constructive feedback to support our pupils growth.

Homework is introduced gradually in Years 1 and 2. Pupils receive Maths homework, such as learning times tables, and tested during the week.

Throughout the year, pupils are assessed through various means including tests, assessments, classwork, behaviour, and other criteria. Class teachers gather feedback from all subject specialist teachers to gain a comprehensive '360°', view of each pupil.

Reports are produced every term, and Parent-Teacher Conferences are held twice a year, in the Autumn and Spring Terms, providing opportunities for parents and teachers to discuss the pupils' progress and address any concerns.

Wraparound Care
After School Care

For families juggling busy schedules, we understand the importance of reliable after-school care. At Salcombe Prep, we offer wraparound care from 8am to 6.15pm during term time, providing support for all our parents.

Activities can be conveniently booked termly through your personal Cognita Connect account, allowing you to customise care to fit your family's needs. Alongside traditional care, pupils can enjoy a variety of engaging activities including Creative Arts, Dance, Multi Sports and Chess.

Holiday Club

Even during school holidays, we recognize the ongoing need for childcare. Each holiday, Salcombe Prep welcomes the 'Smart Play' holiday club to our schools, offering care for pupils from Reception to Year 6, across selected dates throughout the holiday periods.

The provider's holiday programmes feature themed days with a plethora of age-appropriate, challenging, and stimulating educational activities.

Transition to Prep School

Preparing for Year 3: Salcombe Prep’s Transition Morning

The transition from Pre-Prep to Prep School is seamless for our pupils, but we understand it can be daunting for parents. To ease this transition, we host a 'Transition Morning' to ensure everyone feels comfortable and ready for the Year 3 change.

Parents are invited to attend an informal assembly with our Headmistress, Miss Sands, along with some Prep School staff. During this meeting, information about the transition to Prep School is shared, including details about the structure of the ISEB Curriculum that pupils will follow from September. Expectations for both pupils and parents in Year 3 are outlined, and any additional questions from parents are addressed.

During the Summer Term, on 'Move Up Day,' the pupils visit the Prep School for an exciting morning. They experience our 'Senior School' timetable, are guided around the school, and get a taste of what school life will be like in Year 3. To assist in the transition, the children also participate in their first residential experience: a 'sleepover' at the Prep School. Here, our dining room is transformed into a fun sleepover area where the pupils enjoy games, stories, and singalongs to ensure everyone feels comfortable and excited about the transition, whilst preparing them for longer residential trips starting in Year 3.
