Early Years

The start of their educational adventure

Welcome to the vibrant beginning of your child’s educational journey - the Early Years, where their adventure of discovery begins, whether it is in Pre-School or Reception.

At Salcombe Prep, we pride ourselves on fostering the excitement of learning from the very start. Your child’s exploration commences at our Pre-Prep on Green Road, an English Heritage-listed building thoughtfully transformed into a haven for education. Here, their days are spent across an environment of bright, stimulating classrooms, complemented by activities outside in our eco-friendly interactive adventure zones and all-weather play surfaces.

Paving the way for lifelong learning

At Salcombe Prep School, our Early Years curriculum forms a sturdy educational groundwork, preparing pupils for a lifetime of learning. We are committed to providing pupils with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate their educational journey with confidence.

Central to our Early Years Curriculum are engaging and informative lessons designed to broaden children's understanding of the world and foster a love for learning. Weekly specialist sessions in Modern Foreign Languages, Music, and PE offer diverse learning experiences, enriching our pupil’s education.

We prioritise English and Maths through recognised programmes that extend from Early Years right through to our Prep-School. Through various topics, we introduce fundamental mathematical concepts like number, measurement, patterns, and shape, encouraging pupils to apply Maths to real-world situations. Alongside English our topic-based approach allows an exploration of a broad range of humanities subjects which expand our learners horizon whilst strengthen their core skills.

Reading and writing

Fostering a Passion for Language and Literacy

At Salcombe Prep, we foster a deep love for literature in our children from the earliest stages of their educational journey. We carefully monitor each child's development to introduce reading materials at the optimal time. Children regularly bring home a variety of books to expand their vocabulary and engagement. They also enjoy reading to their Prep School buddies, nurturing a genuine love for storytelling. Our effective reading approach consistently exceeds national averages.

Additionally, we prioritise writing skills, emphasising letter formation, spelling, and confident self-expression. Confidence-building is fundamental in our Early Years curriculum, recognising its importance in children's development.

Personalised Learning

Empowering every child

We recognise that children learn at different rates and possess varying abilities compared to their classmates.

At Salcombe Prep, we take pride in adapting our teaching and learning techniques to each child's specific needs.

Our goal is to amplify their strengths, provide support in areas of difficulty, and empower them to achieve success on their own terms

Attendance and Wraparound care

Pre-School pupils are expected to participate in a minimum of five weekly sessions, which can consist of either half or full-day sessions, depending on availability. During the Summer Term pupils are to attend 5 full days, in preparation for the move to Reception.

For Reception pupils, full-time education is mandatory from Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 3:30pm.
